Historical & Biographical Note |
The Society for Lending Comforts to the Sick is a nonprofit organization that lends medical supplies and articles of comfort to the sick for use in their own homes. It was established in 1906 in Smithtown, New York, during the Progressive Era, an international movement marked by social activism and philanthropic works. Founding members included Mrs. Anna Darling, Mrs. Emma Tyler, Mrs. Bertha Williams and Miss Helen Blydenburgh. Members of other prominent Smithtown families have also served as volunteers of the Society throughout its existence. The first meeting was held on April 7, 1906 at Mrs. Darling's house. Today, the Society for Lending Comforts to the Sick, located at 71 Blydenburgh Avenue, continues to provide many of the same services it did when it was first established. |
