Historical & Biographical Note |
Walter Prentice Sanger (August 14, 1881-May 1964), born in Newport, Rhode Island, was best known as "Prentice Sanger" or "W. Prentice Sanger." In 1908, Sanger formed his own architectural firm, Saltus and Sanger. He was an accomplished architect and landscape designer. His work was indicative of the popular architectural styles in the 1920s and 1930s, particularly among the upper middle class living on Long Island at the time. Annette Robinson (1882-1952), Sanger’s second wife, owned the Phillips House, one of Smithtown's historic homes which had served as a mill, general store, post office and stagecoach stop through the years. The property was known as Head of the River Farm when Robinson owned it. When Robinson married Sanger, he remodeled the residence for her. |
