Historical & Biographical Note |
The Blydenburgh family is recognized as one of the first prominent families in the Smithtown and Hauppauge areas. In 1700, Joseph Blydenburgh settled in Smithtown after marrying Deborah Smith, granddaughter of Richard Smith, Patentee of Smithtown. The family lived on the Village Green, in a house believed to be the first house built in the Village of the Branch. It was here, in April 1790, that George Washington, on his journey through Long Island, wrote he "baited the horses at Smith's Town at a widow Blidenberg's, a decent house 10 miles for Setalket." In the early 20th century, the Blydenburgh family was instrumental in many community organizations, taking part in establishing The Society for Lending Comforts to the Sick and The Smithtown Library. |
